Dr Tom Pain is a Consultant in Stroke and Acute Medicine, working full time in stroke medicine at Frimley Park Hospital, a busy Acute Stroke Centre, serving a population of nearly one million people.
Dr Pain studied medicine at the University of Birmingham and completed his specialist training in Acute Internal and Stroke Medicine in the southeast of England and has worked as a consultant since 2017.
He works principally treating acute stroke admissions via the Emergency Department, making decisions about thrombolysis and who to refer for mechanical thrombectomy based on clinical findings and interpretation of advanced brain imaging.
He provides follow on care on the Acute Stroke Unit, and stroke rehabilitation both in the acute hospital setting and in our local rehabilitation hospital. He also manages rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury. He runs a weekly stroke follow up clinic managing cardiovascular secondary prevention, and a TIA (Transient Ischaemic Attack) clinic.
He spent 3 years as the Clinical Lead for Stroke at Frimley Park Hospital, managing the stroke service at Frimley Park Hospital, and previously split his time working as a Consultant in Acute Internal Medicine until 2023.
He currently has an education and supervisory role, as the Royal College of Medicine Tutor at Frimley Park.
He has a particular interest in, and teaches regularly on, Human Factors, Evidence Based Clinical Decision Making, Errors and Cognitive Bias.
Dr Pain has completed Bond Solon training in Expert Witness report writing.
